Seroquel is an antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia in adults and children over 13 years of old. Seroquel is also indicated to treat bipolar disorder or manic depression in patients over 10 years of old.
The medication is available only under prescription; it can be used in complex therapy with antidepressants to treat major depressive disorder.
The medication’s working mechanism involves changing the actions of chemicals in the human brain.
The medication is also available in a form of extended-release tablets which can be used only by adults over 18 years old.
A consultation with a medical professional is needed before starting treatment with this drug. Only a doctor can adjust the correct dose for you, which can be changed during treatment to achieve better results. Before using Seroquel inform your doctor if you suffer from:
- liver or kidney disease;
- heart disease, high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems;
- a thyroid disorder;
- seizures or epilepsy;
- cataracts;
- high cholesterol;
- diabetes;
- trouble swallowing.
Seroquel should be taken exactly as your doctor orders you to do, never exceed the amount prescribed for you, Seroquel overdosing can be fatal. In case you think that you have taken too large dose of the medication, get emergency medical help at once.
Take Seroquel with water, it can be taken regardless from food intake. Swallow the pill whole.
Seroquel may cause hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). If you have diabetes, you need to control your blood sugar level regularly. Your doctor may adjust blood tests on a regular basis while you are being treated with Seroquel.
Warnings:
Do not use this drug if you are allergic to any component of it.
You should not take Seroquel if you have any psychotic conditions related to dementia. Seroquel may cause heart failure, sudden death, or pneumonia in older adults with dementia-related conditions.
Be especially careful when you take this medication if the following symptoms and signs apply to you:
- You think about suicide.
- You have unusual symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts when your dose is changed.
Visit your doctor regularly and undergo all tests he adjusts to you: special blood cells, blood pressure, and vision tests.
Seroquel may cause the following side effects which demand medical help:
- very stiff muscles;
- high fever;
- sweating;
- fast or uneven heartbeats;
- tremors or uncontrolled muscle movements;
- blurred vision and eye pain;
- excessive hunger;
- nausea and vomiting.
Tell your doctor about all other medications you take: prescription or non-prescription. Some medications may affect Seroquel.
Store Seroquel at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Never share your medicine with others.
